What Is an EPIC Number? Format, Where to Find It and Common Mistakes

Your EPIC number is the quickest way to find your voter record. Here is what it looks like, where it is printed, and the typing mistakes that lead to “no record found”.

EPIC stands for Elector’s Photo Identity Card. The EPIC number is the unique identification number printed on your voter ID card. It is also the fastest way to search the electoral roll, because it points to a single record instead of a list of people with similar names.

What an EPIC number looks like

Most cards issued in recent years use a 10-character format: three letters followed by seven digits. Some older cards use state-specific formats that can include more characters and forward slashes.

The examples above are illustrations, not real numbers. Type your number exactly as printed, including any slashes.

Where to find your EPIC number

  • On the front of your voter ID card, usually above or beside your photograph.
  • On your e-EPIC, the digital voter ID available from the Voters’ Services Portal.
  • In acknowledgement messages you received after registering or updating your details, if you saved them.

Common mistakes that cause “no record found”

  • Typing the letter O instead of the digit 0, or I instead of 1.
  • Leaving out a slash or adding spaces in an older-format number.
  • Using a number from an old card that was later replaced. If you received a replacement card, use the newer number.
  • Copying the number from a photograph of the card where characters are blurred.

Still can’t find your record?Try Search by details with your name, relative’s name and age, or search directly on ECI Electoral Search. An empty result on any third-party website does not prove your name is missing from the roll.

Always confirm official procedures on ECI’s websites. Rules, forms and accepted documents can change between elections.
